President Tinubu Awards CFR Honor to Colonel Umar for Democracy Fight

President Bola Tinubu has conferred the prestigious national honor of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on retired Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar in recognition of his significant contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, particularly his role in the June 12 movement.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during the commissioning of a new 300-bed hospital and vocational training institute in Kaduna State. President Tinubu praised Colonel Umar for his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s democratic development and his leadership during a critical period in the nation’s history.

Colonel Umar, a former military administrator of Kaduna State, was a prominent figure in the June 12 movement, which culminated in the recognition of Chief Moshood Abiola as the winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election—an election widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s freest and fairest.

The conferment of the CFR honor underscores the federal government’s recognition of individuals who have made notable sacrifices and contributions towards Nigeria’s democratic progress. President Tinubu’s administration has expressed its commitment to honoring national icons and promoting unity through such recognitions.

The newly commissioned hospital and vocational training institute in Kaduna are part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access and skill development in the region, aligning with the government’s broader agenda of social and economic development.
