Officials said troops have advanced more than one kilometer into areas
within Sirte city that were once occupied by Islamic State fighters.
However; dozens of soldiers and Islamic State fighters were killed as
government forces secure some residential districts.
Sirte has been the stronghold of the Islamic State after the area was
captured in February 2015, but an operation to flush out the terrorist
group began last month.
Meanwhile, at least twenty-five people have been killed by a mystery
explosion in a town close to Tripoli.
Reports say the blast took place in Garabulli after clashes between
locals and militia fighters from the city of Misrata.
Officials initially said a munitions store had exploded but one
resident told the BBC a lorry loaded with fireworks had sparked the
explosion.
