United Nations Secretary General BAN KI-MOON has arrived in Burundi for talks to try and resolve the political conflict in that country.
BAN touched down in Burundi hours after a grenade attack in the capital, Bujumbura, injured several people.Burundi descended in crisis in April last year when President PIERRE NKURUNZIZA declared his intentions to run for a third term. The President has since survived an attempted coup and also went ahead to secure another term of office in a controversial election, which was rejected by the opposition and criticized by the international community. However; the political crisis has fast escalated into a wider ethnic conflict, which has placed Burundi at the brink of a civil war.It is estimated that more than four hundred people have died in clashes between opposition groups and security forces.Neighbouring Rwanda has also been accused of training a rebel militia to wreak havoc in Burundi; an allegation that has been denied by the Rwandan government.
