Durban was awarded the Games in 2015 but the South African sports minister FIKILE MBALULA said the city may not be able to host the event because of financial constraints.
The authorities are yet to make an official announcement about the withdrawal of Durban, but the BBC reports that the decision has already been sealed.
Durban 2022 would have been the first staging of the Commonwealth Games in Africa, which first took place in 1930 and are held every four years.
Meanwhile; Liverpool city council has already indicated interest to host the Commonwealth Games.
