He was arrested in December 2015 as a wave of anti-government protests in the Oromia region was gathering momentum.

The sentencing of the opposition politician cones as another court in Ethiopian convicted journalist GETACHEW SHIFERAW of encouraging revolt.

The judgment marked the climax of the case which started in 2015; after SHIFERAW was arrested for sending a message to a man the government accused of terrorism.

The newspaper editor was originally charged under the country's terror laws with communicating with an outlawed group.

The judgment has been rejected by the Committee to Protect Journalists, which said it was a further blow to press freedom in the country.

Also; the Regional Director of Amnesty International, MUTHONI WANYEKI described the decision as a further slap in the face for justice.

Meanwhile; GETACHEW is expected to be sentenced tomorrow and could bag up to ten years in prison.
