UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed Pays Tribute to Late President Muhammadu Buhari

The Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed, has paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness.

In an emotional statement released on Monday, Mohammed eulogised her former boss and recalled the pivotal role he played in shaping her diplomatic career on the global stage.

“President Buhari was a man of deep conviction and quiet strength. Though never quite at ease with the messiness of politics, he gave everything in service to the Nigerian people,” she said.

She recounted how Buhari personally encouraged her to take up the role of Nigeria’s representative at the United Nations, a decision that would eventually lead her to her current position at the global body.

“His belief in public service was firm, and he saw leadership as a duty, not a reward. It was his encouragement that gave me the courage to represent Nigeria and, later, serve the world,” she added.

Tributes have continued to pour in from world leaders, regional blocs, and former colleagues, reflecting Buhari’s lasting legacy as a former military ruler who later returned as a democratically elected president and led Nigeria through two civilian terms from 2015 to 2023.
