The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress has announced its decision to embark on an indefinite strike beginning from Wednesday this week.

 

The announcement is in response to a directive by the national leadership of NLC for all workers nationwide to protest the removal of fuel subsidy and increase in the pump price of petrol.State Chairman of the NLC, BEATRICE ITUBO announced the decision after an emergency State Executive Council meeting in Port Harcourt.Briefing newsmen after the meeting, ITUBO confirmed that the decision of the state NLC is based on a directive from the national leadership of the congress.ITUBO said by mid night on Tuesday, workers would have no option than to down tools, if the Federal Government fails to revert to the old pump price of petrol.She also said labour intends to also mobilize market traders for the mass planned action.The Rivers State Chairman of NLC said if a counter directive is received from the national leadership of NLC before midnight on Tuesday, union will not hesitate to call off the action.
Correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA reports that the NLC Chairman also played down speculations that the major unions in the oil and gas sector may not join the industrial action.
