The Nigerian Senate is not taking lightly the criminal charges filed against some of its principal officers

The Senate resolved to mandate its Committee on Judiciary to summon the Attorney-General of the Federation to explain and justify with evidence the basis for the action against its principal officers.
ABUBAKAR MALAMI is also expected to convince the Senate why the legal action initiated by his office does not constitute incompetence, gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The resolution was reached based on a point of order raised by Senator DINO MELAYE of the APC from Kogi State which was subjected to a debate on plenary.
Senator MELAYE lashed at the Executive Arm of Government over what he described as chasing of rats while the economy is gradually falling into recession.
Senator MELAYE observed that principal officers of the Senate are being prosecuted for corruption that does not exist.
The APC Senator warned that the emerging trend could pose a threat to the security and unity of Nigeria.
Other senators who supported the motion include Senator SAM ANYANWU of the PDP from Imo State and Senator NWABUOSHI also of the PDP from Delta State.
In his ruling, the Deputy Senate President, IKE EKWEREMADU said he did not have much to say, but warned that those who use their present office to persecute others should remember tomorrow
Thereafter; the Senate adjourned plenary until tomorrow, following a motion moved by the Senate Leader, ALI NDUME and seconded by the Minority Leader
Meanwhile; a letter from President MUHAMMADU BUHARI informing the Senate about his resumption of duty after his vacation in the United Kingdom was read in plenary by the Deputy Senate President, IKE EKWEREMADU.
