Authorities in Turkey have ordered the dismissal of more than eighteen thousand, five hundred state employees, including police officers, soldiers and academics.

An Official Gazette cited by reporters indicates that those sacked had links to terror organisations that act against national security, and the developments comes ahead of anticipated end of two years of emergency rule.

Turkey has been in a state of emergency since the July 2016 attempted overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan but the European Union and critics have repeatedly called on Ankara to end it.

French President Emmanuel Macron says the plan by the European Union to create migrant-processing centres in North Africa will not work.

President Macron said the plan can only materialize if the process is spearheaded by the countries designated to host such facilities.

The French President, who gave this indication in an interview with the BBC in Lagos, conceded that Europe would be dealing with the issue of migration from Africa for decades.

He said many African countries were worried about creating a pull factor for migrants if the proposed centres were set up.

President Macron said Europe would enforce its external border, whilst working with allies to stabilise the situation in Libya to prevent smugglers from taking migrants on the perilous journeys across the Mediterranean.

European Union leaders have reached an agreement on migration after nearly ten hours of talks at a summit in Brussels.

This comes after Italy, which serves as the entry point of thousands of migrants, mainly from Africa, had threatened to veto the conclusions of the entire agenda if it did not receive help on the issue.

Reports say talks continued into the early hours of this morning before a compromise was reached, with EU leaders resolving that new migrant centres could be set up in EU countries on a voluntary basis.
