Akwa united and their brothers and NPFL newcomers, Akwa Starlets ended their opening fixtures in the 2019/2020 NPFL season on a bright note after both clubs secured one point each away from home.

At the Warri city stadium, it was Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) record goal scorer, Mfon Udoh who saved his side, Akwa United, the blushed when his equaliser secured a point for the Uyo side on Sunday against returnees, Warri Wolves.

The Seasiders, who have just returned to the topflight after spending three seasons in the second tier showed hunger from the get-go as they looked to upset their star-studded opponents.

And it was Samuel Amadi who set the ball rolling with his quick-fire goal on the 2nd minute of the encounter. But Udoh whose 23 goals in 2014/15 is yet to be equalled restored parity 26 minutes later to ensure that both sides shared the spoils. Udoh had also ended last season as joint top scorer with Ibrahim Sunusi of Nasarawa United.

Akwa Starlets on their part dazzled to earn one point away from home to Delta force at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, ending the encounter 1-1.

It was the visitors that scored first through Isaac George with an assist from Ifeanyi Ojukwu on the 50th minute while Bala Yahuza leveled up for the homers from Kazie Eyinnayah’s low cross on goal mouth on the 78th.

For the whole of the first quarter, the Delta side mounted all the pressure earning the first corner kick, but they had only a missed attempt by Emmanuel Nnamani from the corner, a failed attempt to break in by Isaac Oduro and a wide strike by Moshood Kasali to show.

The Uyo Starlets turned the pressure with a fast break but Femi Ajayi moved too early and was flagged offside, just as Effimi Nsi was ruled offside in responding counter for Delta.

The biggest impression of the first half came from Ifeanyi Ojukwu who hit the post from a free kick after he was felled at an advantageous position, and Delta would survive another close shave when keeper Lukman Orire was forced to a weak punch out, but Isaac Oduro was on time to clear out.

Danger not averted, Starlets came again with captain Aniekan Ekpe’s crossing a free kick to find Harrison Ibukun but Femi Ajayi ballooned the deflection over the bar, unforced.

Delta replied with a strike by Moshood Kasali before the break but it was too weak for the Starlets goalie, Vincent Edafe.

It was Obinna Bassey who opened the probe at the resumption of play with his 47th strike before Ojukwu set Isaac George up to give the visitors the lead, putting Delta under pressure.

They however responded strongly, rampaging all over the Starlets defence to earn four corner kicks in a row. Their forays paid off on the 78th minute with Bala Yahuza making good of Eyinnaya’s cross to draw the equaliser in a game that saw Isaac George and Fabian Nworie going home with yellow cards.
