FC Barcelona of Spain forward Asisat Oshoala has been named the permanent captain of the Super Falcons by acting head coach Christopher Danjuma.

The announcement at the team’s Abuja training camp by Danjuma who has been placed in charge of the team while the uncertainty surrounding Swede Thomas Dennerby is cleared up, is perhaps the clearest indication yet, that Dennerby is set to sever ties with the team in spite of Minister of Sports Sunday Dare’s intervention in the ongoing standoff between the coach and the Nigeria Football Federation

Oshoala takes over from striker Desire Oparanozie who captained the team at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France and appears to have lost her place in the team after being overlooked for the last three squads.

The 24-year old becomes the fourth permanent captain of Nigeria’s senior women national team in the past year.

The 2015 BBC Woman Footballer of the year was part of the AWCON winning teams in 2014, 2016 and 2018 and has been named CAF Women Footballer of the year on three occasions in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

The Super Falcons are currently training in Abuja ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualifiers against Cote d’Ivoire in October.
