It was third consecutive World Cup title for the US, something the team had never accomplished in their illustrious history.

The victory gave the US 10 World Cup gold medals and was the 22nd win in a row overall for the Americans dating back to the bronze medal game in 2006.

Nigeria’s national women‘s Basketball team D’tigress on Sunday finished eighth place at the just concluded FIBA Women’s World Cup held in Spain.

D’tigress were paired against the Canadians for the seventh place playoff however the Canadians proved too much to handle for the reigning African champions as Canadians won the game by just one point 73-72.

Seen as one of the teams at the World Cup just there to make up the numbers, Nigeria’s D’Tigress were the revelation of the just concluded championship.

Until this championship, no African side had crossed the group stage of the competition.

But D’Tigress broke the jinx when they defeated better-rated sides like Turkey, Greece and Argentina to make the last eight, where they eventually lost narrowly to defending champions, the U.S.

The other African representative Senegal finished 12th.

Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung Congratulating the Nigerian side for a job well done, said the team displayed a high sense of patriotism, determination and hard-work during the competition.
