The use of a jaguar for the Olympic torch relay in the Brazilian city
of Manaus has ended in a tragedy, with the animal shot dead.

A Brazilian army spokesman told reporters that the female Jaguar
escaped her handlers and attacked a soldier.

The animal was killed after four tranquiliser darts failed to stop it.

Organisers of the Rio Games have said it was a mistake to exhibit the
Olympic torch next to a chained wild animal.

However; animal rights groups have condemned the killing, with some
questioning why the animal was involved in the Olympic event.

The Olympic torch relay continues across Brazil, leading up to the
opening ceremony in August.
