Akwa United Football Club of Uyo have been crowned Champions of the 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League Season with a match to spare.

The Promise Keepers defeated Mountain of Fire and Miracle Football Club of Lagos 5-2 at the Godswill Akpabio International stadium, Uyo to take a commanding 71 points lead at the top of the league table.

United's forward Charles Atshimene opened the flood gate nodding home the rebound, 24 minutes into the first half, of Ubong Friday's shot inside the box which was first saved by MFM goal keeper Folarin Abayomi.

Alimi Adebayo of MFM had a match to forget after doubling the lead for the Promise Keepers in an attempt to clear Samuel Amadi's cross.

Veteran Mfon Udoh extended the lead for the home team 17 minutes into the second half with a brilliant curler.

Micheal Mbonu pulled one back for the Olukoya boys from the spot after Samson Gbadebo was adjudged to have fouled Dennis Obasi inside the box at the 68th minute.

Charles Atshimene recorded his brace of the match 5 minutes before full time shooting directly from the away team's box.

An enterprising MFM who couldn't contain the brilliance of the home team regardless scored another consolation from the corner kick, thanks to Obasi's volley.

There were at least 10 pases between Gbadebo, Etyboy Akpan, Seth Mayi and Amadi before Gbadebo launched a through-ball to Wisdom Fernando.

Fernando then crossed in from the right wing of the home side's attack to find Atshimene who nodded home to complete his hat trick, taking his goals tally of the season to 18.

Akwa United confirmed their intention to win the league after recording the longest unbeaten run of 18 games.

This will be the first time the Promise Keepers who also kept the most-clean sheets this campaign will be winning the NPFL title since the club was established 25 years ago.

Akwa United will face Makurdi based club Lobi Stars away from home in their last match day of the season on Thursday.
