Contrary to Popular opinion, Nigerian Football Legend and former National team Coach Christian Chukwu has advised against the sacking of Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr.

Recent Draws with Sierra Leone in the 2021 AFCON qualifier has raised concerns from the Nigerian Football society, questioning Rohr's competency with many ex-internationals and stakeholders in the Sport calling on the Nigerian Football hierarchy to sack the Franco-German tactician.

However, The Chairman as Chukwu is fondly called in an interview with Today Sportslive of Today FM Said there are no basis strong enough to axe Rohr, citing Nigeria's standing in group L of the AFCON qualifier.

He said; "I'm not in the group of people who support the sacking of the Coach. But, we should push him to improve our game. After-all we're still number one, leading the group (AFCON 2021 qualifiers group). So, It can't be said he's not doing well.

"You know we don't have patience in Nigeria. How can Sierra Leone play us 4-4 here and we travel there only to play 0-0. We believe we're 10 times better than Sierra Leone. Still we can give him another chance."

The former Gabon and Etoile du Sahel Manager has been heavily criticized for snubbing home based players in his squad and Chukwu who coached Enugu Rangers in 2008-2009 echoed the voices of these critics, stressing the importance of home based players in the national team.

"My only headache with Rorh is that he's not interested in home based players. That's the only problem I have with him. He should consider home based players. They're the people that will fight for him and give him the kind of result he wants." He said.

Chukwu further faulted Rohr's inability to build a "standard" team since taking charge of the Eagles in 2016.

"Gernot Rohr has stayed up to 4 years in this country. By now he should have a standard team, a very good standard team. It's not everyday he'll be telling us he's trying players. If he wants to try players, it should be one or two." Chukwu added.

Prior to the qualifiers against Sierra Leone, Rohr had 8 new invitees in his team for the Tunisia and Algeria Friendly in which Nigeria failed to win any (defeat by Algeria 1-0 and draw to Tunisia 1-1).

Chukwu added that "He (Rohr) can not keep changing the whole team everytime. That's not how I see coaching. Let him build a Standard team. He can not keep inviting [numerous] players everytime, telling us he's building a team everyday. It is not right."

Chukwu Coached the Nigeria National team from 2003-2005, taking the team to a semi final finish in the 2004 AFCON. Commenting on Rohr's future with the Eagles as well as development of Nigeran Football, Chukwu emphasized on the clauses inserted in Rohr's new contract by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) when he said; "Make Sure he lives in Nigeria, he watches Nigerian league. He should select home based players. He can camp them for two or three weeks, teaching them the game of football if they're not playing what he wants. He can now invite three or four players from abroad. Any African team has more home based players than foreign based. He can't tell me that he can't get home based players that can defend any team. He can get foreign (based) players for the attack but not defenders, not Goal Keepers."

Nigeria travel to Porto-Novo’s Stade Charles de Gaulle for their next AFCON Qualifiers fixture against Benin Republic in March 2021.

Gernot Rohr's contract expires 2022 and he has been tasked by the NFF to win the 2021 AFCON slated for Cameroon.
