Technical Adviser of Rivers United Stanley Eguma says the just concluded Gov. Wike preseason tournament held at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt has helped him to have a better understanding of his players.

Rivers United defeated Bayelsa United 5-4 on penalties yesterday after regulation time ended 1-1 to claim the 2nd edition of the tournament.

Christian Mizo's header put Bayelsa United in front at the 51st minute but Chika Godwin leveled things from a well worked ball to put Rivers United back into the game.

Henceforth it was the pride of Rivers who threw in the fireworks but couldn't find the back of the net until full time.

The match was decided on penalties as Rivers United's new signing Theophilus Afelokhai cooly converted the last one from the spot to ensure Eguma's men scored all five of their Penalty shootouts after Raphael John, Bayelsa United's goal keeper blew into high heavens their last spot kick.

Eguma, who's team is billed to take on Futuro Kings of Equatorial Guinea in the preliminary round of the 2020/2021 CAF confederation cup will have the tournament to thank, saying it has added to his understanding of the players.

"We try to understand the players, to know their character when it comes to match proper", Eguma told Sport Attack of Today FM in an interview.

"This competition has given us the opportunity to see them in a match situation, to see their reaction and to see their approach towards our game plan. [It has helped me] to see how they absorb our tactical plan and how they execute them on the pitch.

"It was a good experience for us especially as we're preparing to go to the continent and knowing fully well that every game is important."

Up next for the pride of Rivers is a CAF confederation cup tie against Minnows, Futuro Kings of Equatorial Guinea before NPFL opener on December 6 against Rangers international of Enugu.
