This is because a nongovernmental organization, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has disagreed with the position of the Presidency, which wrote the Senate last week to defend BABACHIR LAWAL.
SERAP wants President MUHAMMADU BUHARI to urgently refer the allegations against the SGF to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission for further investigation.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, ADETOKUNBO MUMUNI, SERAP maintained that if there is relevant and sufficient admissible evidence, BABACHIR LAWAL should face prosecution.
SERAP also urged President BUHARI to urgently publish the outcome of the investigation conducted on the matter by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, ABUBAKAR MALAMI.
In an open letter to the President dated 27th January, SERAP also demanded the AGF to hand over the file to both the EFCC and ICPC.
It expressed concern that the failure to suspend BABACHIR LAWAL from his position as Secretary to the Government of the Federation pending the investigation by the AGF, and the perceived lack of transparency in the outcome of that investigation may have created the impression that the Presidency was treating LAWAL as a sacred cow.
SERAP cited that Senate’s report that indicted the SGF, stating that the SGF was the director of Global Vision Limited when the company was awarded contracts of over two hundred million naira to clear invasive plant species in Yobe State in March 2016, and remained the signatory to the company’s account.
