The Senate Committee is also to examine the processes involved in importation of goods into the country.

This followed a motion sponsored ?by Senator HOPE UZODINMA of the PDP from Imo West, calling for an urgent need to stem the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons in Nigeria.?

While reeling out the importance of the motion, Senator UZODINMA noted that the peace and security of Nigeria was being threatened by the influx of illegal firearms.

The PDP Senator recalled that the Nigerian Customs Service seized a truck load of sophisticated rifles that were illegally imported into the country from China.

In adopting the motion; the Senate expressed worry about a report by the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Development that Nigeria accounts for about three hundred and fifty million illegal arms in the region, which is about seventy percent of an estimated five hundred million illegal firearms in circulation.

Also today; the Senate advised the Executive Arm of the Federal Government to settle its indebtedness to local contractors. ?

The call was contained in a resolution based on motion sponsored by Senator OLUREMI TINUBU of the APC ?from Lagos Central, and co-sponsored by five other Senators.

Senator TINUBU noted that the economic crisis in the country due to the price of crude oil in the international market has slowed down growth and increased the rate of unemployment in Nigeria.

In his contribution, Senator MAGNUS ABE of the APC for River South-East Senatorial District, backed the motion and urged the Federal Government to pay contractors to enable workers return to site.?
