Senate Says Empirical Data Informed Decision on Electronic Transmission of Election Results

The Senate of Nigeria has stated that empirical data guided its decision to make the electronic transmission of election results discretionary rather than mandatory as part of the ongoing reform of the country’s electoral governance framework.

According to the upper chamber, the position reflects the stark realities facing Nigeria and was reached after extensive consultations and engagements with key stakeholders in the nation’s communications and power sectors, among others, rather than emotions or sentiment.

Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, clarified the chamber’s stance through his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs on Sunday. He noted that law-making carries significant global responsibilities and stressed that the Senate cannot exercise such duties in a manner that would be detrimental to citizens.

Bamidele added that the decision underscores the legislature’s commitment to balancing technological advancement in the electoral process with the practical infrastructure and operational challenges currently confronting the country.
