RIVERS UNITED COACH STANLEY EGUMA REVEALS WHY HE CANNOT BE SACKED BY RIVERS STATE GOVERNMENT

Rivers United Coach Stanley Eguma has given insight on his job situation as the manager of the pride of Rivers, revealing why he cannot be sacked by Rivers State government.

Stanley Eguma is the only active coach in the Nigerian league who has stayed with a single club close to a  decade, dating back to his days as Dolphins manager before both Rivers clubs, Dolphins and Sharks were merged to form Rivers United and Eguma reappointed manager in 2016.  No manager in the current league season (excluding the newly promoted sides) has spent up to 3 years and above with their present clubs.

While fielding questions after the club’s away win to Warri wolves in Matchday 5 of the Nigeria professional football league (NPFL), excited Eguma posited that it’s not in the jurisdiction of the fans to call for his sack rather the fans’ duty is to “pray for” and “support” the team.

“I have a contract with the team and I’m working with the confinement of my own contract and it holds on the management of the team to assess my performance within whatever is available for me to do the Job. If I am doing well within whatever is available for me to perform. I think it may dwells on them [the management] to take such decision and not the fans.

“The fans is to pray for the team, work hard, support and pray for the team to get the success.” He advised.

Eguma who took Rivers United to Aiteo cup semi-final last season believes the results obtained by the Rivers State owned club is equivalent to the quality of personnel at his disposal. Eguma demonstrated that if more is required more will have to be put in.

The former Dolphins manager who led Rivers United to a first round finish in their first ever CAF champions league appearance in 2017 after finishing second in the league in 2016 indicated that his employers are satisfied with the results and will not discuss sacking since the outcome of the performance of the team is equivalent to what the management has put in place.

“The performance of everybody [is] within whatever that is made available by the management. That is the thing. Because you don’t expect to get something when you don’t put in something. You have to put in something  so that you get something. So, whatever that has been given, we work within that and then grind out the result that is equivalent to it. So, I think we are doing our best so far.” He argued.

He further called on the fans to show understanding and patience toward the team.

“The fans should understand. Let them be patient and understand the team. Everybody is working hard in the team, including the management and the players”

Rivers United are seated 7th in the 2019/2020 NPFL table with 9 points from 6 matches having recorded 2 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss. Their next fixture will be away to the people’s elephant, Enyimba at Aba on the 8th of December which will be postponed due to Enyimba’s involvement in the CAF confederation cup same day.
