Some residents of Rivers State have expressed concern over what they describe as unfair fare practices by e-hailing drivers, accusing them of demanding payments above the amounts displayed on ride-hailing apps.
Speaking to our correspondent, the residents said the growing trend has made e-hailing services less reliable and more expensive, forcing many commuters to return to using public transportation.
According to them, drivers often justify the additional charges by citing longer distances, rising fuel costs, traffic delays and waiting time. However, they argued that any fare adjustments should be determined by the app and not negotiated directly with passengers.
The residents noted that the practice places an additional financial burden on many households, with some passengers reportedly paying more than double the fare initially quoted by the app.
They called on e-hailing companies and relevant regulatory authorities to investigate the complaints, enforce fare compliance and protect passengers from what they described as exploitative practices.
