Rivers: Court remands man for attempted murder

Chief Magistrate Sotonye Harry issued the remand, following an Ex parte application contained in a remand warrant.

During the court session, the prosecution informed the court about the remand warrant, citing Section 300 of the SCJN Act.

The charges against the accused include attempted murder, cultism, and other related offenses under the criminal law of the state, particularly Section 320 of the Criminal Code of Rivers State Administration of Justice.

The police prosecutor explained that the application, supported by a one-page affidavit from Inspector Stephen of the Anti-Cultism Unit on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, was necessary as other defendants implicated in the same offense are already undergoing trial in different courts.

Chief Magistrate Harry, after hearing the prosecution, directed that the accused be remanded in prison and ordered the case file to be transmitted to the Department of Public Prosecution, DPP, before adjourning to May 2, 2024, for DPP advice.

Robert is the third person, including one Leesor Kpugisere, arrested and arraigned before the court for alleged cultism and attempted murder against TOPBA.

The incident occurred on March 12, 2023, when Topba, an activist, was ambushed on his way back from his village in Zaapko community, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He was shot multiple times and left half-dead before being rescued and taken to the hospital by passersby.
