Rivers Chief Judge decries under staffing in the Judiciary

Justice Chibuzor-Amadi who spoke during the special court session marking the opening of 2023-2024 Legal year, disclosed that a judge is expected to have eight staff, while a Magistrate is expected to have at least six staff for effective discharge of their responsibilities.

The Chief Judge however, appealed to the Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara to approve the employment of at least three hundred staff for effective functioning of the judicial system.

Justice Chibuzor-Amadi who also used the opportunity to cautioned the Nigeria Police and other prosecutors against charging cases in a court that lacks jurisdiction, urged lawyers and litigants to desist from unnecessary petitions which he said attributes to the congestion of court.

The Chief Judge of the state revealed that thirty-six thousand eight hundred and seventy four case were brought forward from October, 2022 to October, 2023, but seventeen thousand, seven hundred and eighty-four cases were filed, while seventeen thousand eight hundred seventy four were disposed, with thirty-six thousand, seven hundred and twelve pending.

Today FM’S Uchendu Ejiowhor reports that the Chief Judge of Rivers State also revealed that the judiciary received six hundred and forty-five million, six hundred and forty-four thousand, four hundred and eighty-seven naira twenty seven kobo between the year under review.
