Residents, Traders Raise Alarm Over Insecurity, Faulty Street Lights in Port Harcourt

Residents and traders in parts of Port Harcourt have called on the government to urgently intervene as insecurity worsens along Rumuola Road, Rumuokoro, and the Mile One Market axis, blaming the situation on non-functional street lights.

They warned that prolonged darkness in these busy areas at night is exposing residents to danger and crippling commercial activities.

At Rumuokoro, traders said the street lights have been out for more than two years, forcing them to adjust their business routines out of fear of attacks.

In Rumuola, drivers and shop owners who spoke with our reporter, Emelda Ifeme, alleged that touts and suspected thieves now take advantage of dark spots around the flyover, using them as hideouts.

At the Mile One Market, businesswomen recounted repeated cases of nighttime robberies, claiming that hoodlums often escape through the nearby railway line after dispossessing victims of their belongings.
