Referee, Student Among Hundreds Killed in Iran Anti-Government Protests

A referee and a student are among hundreds of people reportedly killed during widespread anti-government protests across Iran, according to accounts from friends and human rights organisations.

A friend disclosed that Coach Amir Mohammad Koohkan, a referee, was hit by live ammunition on January 3 during protests in the town of Neyriz. The incident is one of several deadly encounters reported amid the ongoing unrest.

Human rights groups also reported that Rubina Aminian, a student, was shot from behind during a protest in Tehran, adding to concerns over the use of lethal force against demonstrators.

Meanwhile, a United States-based human rights organisation said nearly 500 protesters and 48 security personnel have been killed within two weeks of protests, highlighting the escalating toll of the crackdown.

The protests, which have spread to several cities, are reportedly driven by public anger over governance and economic conditions, with international rights groups calling for restraint and accountability.
