President MUHAMMADU BUHARI has welcomed the pledge of commitment by most countries around the world to the successor programme to the Millennium Development Goals.
President BUHARI said the post-2015 Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals have come with lofty aspirations. The Nigerian leader said the SDGs that target development cooperation by the international community up to the year 2020 deserve universal support. He said for the SDGs to be truly global, they must be practical, adding that core objectives of poverty eradication and reducing inequalities must be met within the framework of a revitalized global partnership support by concrete policies and actions as outlined in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.
President BUHARI’s remarks were contained in his address to world leaders at the Seventieth Summit of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He noted that the two core objectives of the SDGs are precisely at the centre of Nigeria’s new Administration’s agenda.
The President emphasized that Foreign Direct Investment supplemented where suitable by Official Development Assistance as outlined in the Addis Ababa Agenda are necessary conditions for accelerated development in countries that are trying to catch up. The Nigerian leader appealed to industrialized countries to redeem their pledge of earmarking zero point seven percent of their Gross Domestic Product to development assistance.
