President MUHAMMADU BUHARI has kicked off his probe of financial dealings of the Nigerian Military, with the setting up of an investigation committee headed by retired Air Vice Marshal J.O.N. ODE. The National Security Adviser, BABAGANA MONGUNO set up the eleven-man committee based on the directive of President BUHARI.Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, FEMI ADESINA, who confirmed the move in a statement, said the committee would look into the procurement of military hardware and munitions over the past nine years, beginning from 2007.
ADESINA said the investigation is in line with the determination of President BUHARI to stamp out corruption and other forms of irregularities in the Nigerian public service. He said the committee will determine whether contract for the procurement of military equipment complied with laid down procedures.
It would also look into allegations of exclusion of relevant logistics department of the Nigerian Military from arms procurement contracts under the past administrations. The goal of the investigation is to determine whether such practices in the past were responsible for the purchase of substandard equipment for the Nigerian Military.
