You will recall that the Senate had last year accused BABACHIR LAWAL of allegedly profiteering from the award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East and called for his removal and prosecution.
The Senate resolution was based on the adoption of the report of it Committee on the North East headed by Senator SHEHU SANI.
But in a letter addressed to the Senate President, President BUHARI said he could not implement the resolution of the Senate for the removal and prosecution of BABACHIR LAWAL due to certain breaches.
President BUHARI noted that only three Senators out of nine members of the committee signed the interim report that indicted the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The President further stated that the SGF was not given fair hearing by the Senate Committee before the report was made.
But in his reaction; Senator SHEHU SANI who chaired the Senate Committee, said the letter by President BUHARI does not reflect the anti-corruption stance of his government.
Senator SHEHU noted that in the fight against corruption; the President uses insecticide for the judiciary and the legislature while it applies deodorant for officials in the Presidency.
In the meantime; the Senate has acknowledged President BUHARI’s letter in which he made a fresh nomination for the confirmation of IBRAHIM MAGU as substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
President BUHARI’s letter was read by Senate President BUKOLA SARAKI, in which he explained that he had taken administrative steps to ensure speedy clarification of a security report which the Senate relied upon to initially withhold MAGU’s confirmation.
