Police denies attack,death of colleagues in clash with youths in Akwa Ibom.

Citing a report on an online version of a popular newspaper, the Police Public Relations Officer, CHUKWU IKECHUKWU, said the claim by one EMMANUEL AYUNGBE was false and misleading.

 

IKECHUKWU, who is a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed that trouble started after the Command received information about the alleged torture to death of one UDO NICE NYONG who was accused of stealing Okazi vegetable at Ekom Iman village.

 

The PPRO said a team of Anti-Kidnapping Police Squad verified the information and confirmed that the body of the deceased was buried in a shallow grave, and decided to interrogate the youth leader of the community where the incident happened.

 

He said after the police team led by an Inspector took in UNYIME ISIAH JOSHUA for questioning, they were ambushed by armed youths numbering about seventy.

 

The police spokesman said a member of the team, Sergeant DANIEL NWANKWO was inflicted with machete cuts and later abducted to an unknown location, and has not been seen since 21st of April.

 

He also confirmed that one UBONG ISAIAH was shot dead as he engaged one of the policemen in a struggle to disarm him, while another policeman was chased into the palace of the village head, and left with wounds.

 

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command spokesman said the vehicle used by the police team for the operation was burnt by the irate youths, while one of three rifles that were stolen by the Etinan youths remain missing.
