Ten days after the tragic death of Arise Television news anchor and producer, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, the Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of 12 suspects linked to the armed robbery incident that claimed her life.
Somtochukwu, fondly known by colleagues and viewers as Sommie, was killed in the early hours of September 29 when a gang of armed robbers stormed her residence in the Katampe Extension area of Abuja. The attack also led to the death of a private security guard attached to the building.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrests, noting that the suspects were apprehended following a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving multiple tactical units of the FCT Police Command.
According to Adejobi, the police recovered several items from the suspects, including firearms, ammunition, and personal belongings believed to have been taken from the victims during the attack. He added that investigations were still ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang who remain at large.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, commends the FCT Command for its swift response and assures the public that justice will be served in this case. The police will ensure that all those involved, directly or indirectly, are brought before the law,” the statement read.
The death of Somtochukwu, a rising broadcast journalist known for her professionalism and engaging on-air presence, sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s media landscape. Colleagues at Arise News described her as “a bright, passionate storyteller whose commitment to excellence inspired everyone around her.”
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and several media advocacy groups have since called on authorities to strengthen security across residential areas in the Federal Capital Territory, citing growing concerns over rising cases of armed robbery, burglary, and violent attacks.
Somtochukwu, who was in her early 30s, had built a promising career in journalism, covering major national and international stories for Arise TV. Her death has sparked renewed conversations about the safety of journalists and young professionals living in Nigeria’s urban centres.
Police authorities have urged members of the public with additional information regarding the incident to come forward, assuring that all credible leads will be followed to ensure the full prosecution of those responsible.
Funeral arrangements for the late journalist are expected to be announced by her family in the coming days.
