Opposition leader and former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to contest for the office of the President in the 2027 general elections, putting to rest widespread speculation about his political future.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, dismissed rumours suggesting he would serve as running mate to Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the next election cycle.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party, under which he contested in the 2023 elections, while also emphasizing his active role in the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition coalition aimed at dethroning the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
“I am not running as anyone’s deputy,” Obi stated firmly. “I remain a vibrant member of the Labour Party and will seek the presidency again come 2027 under a united opposition front that prioritizes the Nigerian people.”
The former governor’s declaration sets the stage for a high-stakes political contest as incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC has signaled intentions to pursue a second term in office.
Political analysts believe Obi’s early declaration could reshape alliances and intensify efforts within the opposition to build a formidable coalition ahead of the next general elections.
