Some parents and guardians have expressed support for the proposed plan by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ban the sale of sachet alcohol in Nigeria.
In interviews, the parents said the move would help protect children and young adults from the harmful effects of excessive alcohol consumption and reduce exposure to early drinking habits.
However, traders involved in the sale of sachet alcoholic drinks have raised concerns that the proposed ban could affect their source of income and disrupt small-scale businesses dependent on the trade.
Meanwhile, health experts, including Consultant Family Physician Dr. Edward Ikpea, have warned that excessive alcohol consumption contributes to serious health challenges such as liver disease and mental health disorders.
Dr. Ikpea urged those involved in the sachet alcohol business to consider the long-term health impact on society rather than focusing only on immediate economic benefits.
