Osinbajo Mourns Buhari, Says Nigeria Has Lost a True Patriot

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a man of unwavering devotion to the country.

Osinbajo, who served as Vice President from 2015 to 2023 during Buhari’s two-term civilian administration, said the passing of the former leader marks the end of an era of principled leadership and national sacrifice.

In a personally signed statement released shortly after the announcement, Osinbajo said: “Nigeria has lost a true patriot—a man whose life was marked by unyielding devotion to the nation he loved. His legacy will continue to shape the course of our national journey.”

Buhari’s death was confirmed earlier by President Bola Tinubu, who has since ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country to honour the late leader’s memory.

Reflecting on their time together in office, Osinbajo praised Buhari’s steady leadership during turbulent times, his integrity, and his dedication to building a more resilient and secure Nigeria.

“He believed deeply in this country and served with quiet strength and firm resolve. I consider it a profound privilege to have worked closely with him in service to our people,” Osinbajo stated.

Tributes have continued to pour in from leaders across the political spectrum, further underscoring Buhari’s influence on Nigeria’s contemporary history. A national day of mourning is expected to be announced in the coming days.
