The stakeholders under the banner of Ogoni Environmental Foundation alleged that the exercise was an attempt to deploy foreign bacteria and chemicals in the name of technology on Ogoniland.
The position of the group was contained in a letter addressed to the Minister of Environment and signed by the President, Professor FRIDAY SIGALO.
It noted that the deployment of the bacteria protozaans and fungi in Ogoniland cannot be the same as those in unrelated regions and therefore the application needs to be done according to best practice.
The foundation claims that the pilot test could complicate issues by not only introducing exotic soil species that destroy some biologically beneficial species but will homogenize the ecosystem, which it said the world was avoiding.
The OEF said the most important thing to do at this stage is to commission a Ground Truth-Survey of the site studied by UNEP and a baseline assessment, which have been polluted after the UNEP study.
It also called on the Minister of Environment to dissolve the technical committee which was earlier set up, since the HYPREP Coordinator has been appointed.
