NNPC Ltd announces planned maintenance shutdown of Port Harcourt Refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced to the general public that the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) will undergo a planned maintenance shutdown.

Rumours are already rife that the Refinery has packed up, but Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the NNPC Ltd, said the scheduled maintenance and sustainability assessment commenced on May 24, 2025. This must have created the wild rumour that the Refinery packed up.

Soneye said: “We are working closely with all relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), to ensure that the maintenance and assessment activities are carried out efficiently and transparently.”

He said NNPC Ltd. remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering sustainable energy security for Nigeria, and that further updates would be provided regularly through their official channels, including their website, media platforms, and public statements.

Being that the NNPC statement reached most members of the public two days after the shutdown, it is not clear to some sections of the public if the refinery packed up or if it was under scheduled shutdown.
