NMA Raises Alarm Over Heaps of Waste in Rivers State, Warns of Possible Epidemic

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has expressed serious concern over the growing heaps of waste littering major roads across Rivers State, warning that the situation poses a significant health risk to residents.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, the Chairman of the NMA in Rivers State, Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro, called on the state government to take immediate action to evacuate the mounting refuse, which he described as a potential trigger for an epidemic if left unattended.

Dr. Tamunokuro emphasized that the current state of sanitation in parts of the state is worrisome and could expose the public to diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and other waste-related infections.

“The health of residents is at serious risk. If urgent steps are not taken to address the waste situation, we may be facing an outbreak that could have been avoided,” he warned.

The NMA urged relevant authorities to prioritize environmental hygiene and intensify efforts to restore cleanliness across the state to safeguard public health.
