NMA Chairman in Rivers State, Doctor DATONYE ALASIA made the call in an address at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Physicians Week held in Port Harcourt.
Doctor ALASIA said the National Health Act provides for Basic Health Care Fund that could be used for the provision of essential drugs, equipment and infrastructure for health institutions.
The State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association lamented that two years after the signing of the act, it was yet to become operational, thereby no serving the intended purpose.
Doctor ALASIA appealed to government at all levels to immediately start implementation of provisions in the National Health Act without further delay.
Also speaking, Doctor BERNARD APRIOKU decried lack of funding of public health institutions, which he observed was responsible for members of the public who patronize quacks for their medical care.
