NiMet Warns of Flash Flood Risk in Rivers, 26 Other States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an urgent public advisory warning of severe flash flood risks in Rivers State and 26 other states, with the alert taking effect from July 10.

NiMet attributed the heightened flood threat to persistent rainfall recorded throughout June, which has left soils across many parts of the country heavily saturated.

The agency warned that with the ground unable to absorb additional rainfall, any further downpour could result in rapid surface runoff, increasing the risk of flash flooding capable of damaging critical infrastructure, disrupting transportation and affecting agricultural activities.

According to the advisory, the flood alert covers 27 states across the country’s various geopolitical zones, with residents in affected areas urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures.
