The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has ordered an investigation into an ambush and killing of four policemen at Sabon Gida, Ora, in Edo State over the weekend.

 

Reports say the policemen were on patrol when they drove into an ambush by armed robbers, who opened fire and caused their vehicle to burst into flames.

 

The incident on Saturday happened just as the Police High Command was still battling to crack a similar ambush by robbers in Abuja that claimed the lives of seven policemen on 2nd July.

 

However; a statement released by Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, noted that investigations have not established any link between the two incidents.

 

Moshood further disclosed that some public spirited individuals have been giving useful information to the Police in the on-going investigations, requires additional assistance from the public for credible information.

 

He said the Police High Command was also offering five million naira reward to anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining perpetrators of the attack on the seven policemen in Abuja.

 

The Force was also offering additional five million naira reward for information on the gunmen who killed four policemen at Sabon Gida, Ora, in Edo State last Saturday.

The death toll from the tanker explosion which occurred last week in Lagos has risen to twelve.

 

The State Commissioner for Health, Jide Idris told newsmen  that  ten bodies were recovered from the scene of the incident as opposed to the nine initially reported.

 

The tenth body recovered was that of an infant, while two of the seven survivors later died in the hospital.

 

The Commissioner added that others injured victims are responding to treatment.

 

However; the Lagos State Government is finalizing plans to prosecute the owner and driver of the fuel tanker that exploded along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Thursday last week.

 

Commissioner of Police in the state, Imohimi Edgal disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the end of the Security Council Meeting chaired by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

 

The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem, had written to the police commissioner at the weekend, to advise him on the relevant provisions of the law that could guide the on-going investigation that would lead to possible prosecution.

 

Edgal who confirmed receipt of the letter said investigations into the incident were on-going, adding that government would not allow vehicles that pose a serious danger to residents on the road.

 

The Police Commissioner also commiserated with those who lost their loved ones to the tragic incident and commended emergency responders who quickly raced to the scene to keep the causality figure low.

MACRON TO VISIT AFRIKA SHRINE

The Lagos State Government is preparing to host the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has ordered restriction of vehicular movement in parts of Ikeja, Alausa and Agidingbi.

 

The movement restriction, which is billed to be enforced on Tuesday, is to make way for the French President to attend an event at the Afrika Shrine run by afro beat maestro, Femi Kuti, which is located in the area.

 

The Lagos State Government has also announced restriction of petrol tankers designated route in the state, following the fire disaster that claimed the life of nine people and destroyed fifty-six vehicles on Otedola Bridges, near Berger bus-stop on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway last week.

At least nine people have died and no fewer than fifty-four vehicles destroyed in a petrol tanker fire in Lagos State.

 

Our correspondent reports that the petrol tanker exploded at about 5:30PM yesterday on the Otedola Bridge, along the ever busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, about a hundred metres from the popular Berger Bus-Stop.

 

The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the death toll and burnt vehicles in a statement obtained by our correspondent last night.

 

LASEMA and other emergency response agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, have been working overnight to put out the tanker fire, which spread several metres from the explosion spot, as well as to provide help to the injured and clear the road of burnt vehicles.

 

 The Lagos State Government has sympathized with families of victims of the fatal petrol tanker explosion through Commissioner for Information and Strategy; Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan described the incident as a sad development, adding that it was most unfortunate and regrettable. 

 

In a statement; the Commissioner said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has directed all relevant agencies to move into the area to calm the apprehension that had taken over the area and to also ensure that those in need are adequately taken care of.

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation to gazette his declaration on June Twelve as Democracy.

 

Also to be published in the Federal Gazette is the award of the National Honours on the acclaimed winner of the June 12 presidential election in 1993, late Chief M.K.O Abiola; his running-mate, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe; and foremost human rights advocate, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi.

 

The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed in a statement that President Buhari wants the process for the publication of the Executive Order in the official gazette to be completed before Tuesday next week, to enable the award conferment ceremony hold as planned.

The Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos has been chosen as the preferred venue to host the 2nd window of the 2019 FIBA Men World Cup qualification games.

 

The venue is expected to wear a new look ahead of the first game between Mali and Rwanda on Friday, June 29th 2018.

 

The choice of bidding to host Group B games by the factional President of the NBBF, Engineer Musa Kida was in line with the promise of attracting international basketball championships to Nigeria before his election last year.

 

Nigeria are currently leading Group B after defeating Mali, Uganda and Rwanda during the first set of its group games played in Bamako.
