The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has commenced training of its personnel of its legal department ahead of the 2019 general election.

The training on prosecution of electoral offences, which is holding on Victoria Island, Lagos, is also being attended by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

INEC big wigs from the National Secretariat and the Secretariats of the thirty-six states are attending the workshop alongside other key stakeholders.

Meanwhile; the Independent National Electoral Commission says it is targeting the registration of about thirteen million new voters by the end of the Continuous Voter Registration in August.

INEC’s projection was raised from its initial target of ten million new voters due to the volume of Nigerians who are turning up to participate in the registration exercise.

The electoral body has also said it was aware of concerns by stakeholders regarding the delayed approval of the budget for the 2019 general election.

It therefore expressed confidence that all of the concerns would be resolved and the election budget would be approved on time before the elections next year.

This assurance was given by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, while responding to questions on a national television programme.

Rotimi Oyekanmi is the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmud Yakubu.

The Nigerian Senate has demanded an end to the security siege on the Abuja residence of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

The Senate made the demand based on a motion moved by Senator Chukwuka Utazi, who came under Order Forty-Two and Fifty-Two to the attention of the Senate to what he called the incarceration of Senator Ekweremadu.

Lending his support for the motion, Senator Sam Anyanwu recalled that he was with the Deputy Senate President yesterday and there was no notice of any invitation from the security agencies.

The PDP Senator from Imo State said the idea of laying siege on Senator Ekweremadu’s house without prior notice demands some explanation.

On his part; Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, said he was deeply worried about what he considered to be a strange development that not only threatens Nigeria’s democracy, but the unity of this country as well.

Senator Bwacha said the issues go beyond political parties, and advised the security operatives to understand that they are expected to protect all citizens, adding that threats will not help matters.

After the adoption of the motion, the Senate resolved to adjourn plenary for six weeks, which would elapse in September.

Earlier; the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, reported to the chamber that his Deputy, Senator IKE Ekweremadu was absent from plenary because he could not get out of his house.

Senator Saraki therefore challenged his colleagues to rise up and join hands to save Nigeria’s democracy.

OSHIOMHOLE THREATENS MINISTERS

Tuesday, 24 July 2018 09:26

Away from Rivers State; the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has threatened to unleash his powers against some erring Ministers serving in the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oshiomhole observed that some of the Ministers were not performing their duties creditably and were taking advantage of President Buhari’s fatherly disposition to disobey his orders and the party's directives.

The former Governor of Edo State also said he would prevail on the President to sack non-performing ministers in his cabinet, adding that if the President condones disrespect for his office, he does not.

Adams Oshiomhole has therefore picked on the Minister of Labour and Employment, Doctor Chris Ngige, in what appears an attempt to test the potency of his powers as National Chairman of the ruling party.

Oshiomhole has threatened to suspend the former Governor of Anambra State from the APC over delay in the composition of the boards of agencies under the Ministry.

These include the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, National Directorate of Employment, National Productivity Centre, and the Michael Imoudu Institute for Labour Studies.

Addressing questions from State House correspondents in Abuja after a visit to the President at the Presidential Villa, Oshiomhole warned that the APC under his leadership would not continue to tolerate ministers who abuse their office and disrespect the President.

He said once he expels any minister for disrespect of the President and the party’s instruction, he would prevail on President Buhari to remove such person from his cabinet.

In his response; Ngige expressed disbelief at the comment by the APC National Chairman, just he told newsmen that he would constitute the board of the NSITF but not within the time limit dictated by Oshiomhole.
