President MUHAMMADU BUHARI has sworn-in the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor YAKUBU MAHMOOD, as well as six national commissioners of INEC. In performing the ceremony, President BUHARI promised to allow electoral commission live up to its name as an independent institution.

President MUHAMMADU BUHARI has sworn-in the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor YAKUBU MAHMOOD, as well as six national commissioners of INEC. In performing the ceremony, President BUHARI promised to allow electoral commission live up to its name as an independent institution. The President said he will not interfere with the operations of INEC, and also called on Nigerians to work towards strengthening the electoral system. BUHARI also made a strong case for the prosecution of electoral offenders, while appealing to the judiciary to address the shortcomings in the administration of justice. In his responses, the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor, MAHMOOD YAKUBU said they would be courageous in taking decisions at the commission. YAKUBU also pledged to be guided by the Electoral Act and the Constitution in the discharge of their duties. The ceremony was witnessed by Vice-President YEMI OSINBAJO, Senate President BUKOLA SARAKI, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, YAKUBU DOGARA.
