Life is gradually returning to normal in the commercial city of Aba in Abia State after a mass protest that paralysed activities. Hundreds of individuals sympathetic to the Biafran agitation marched on the streets of Aba yesterday to draw attention to their cause. Markets and schools were closed down for a day to solidarity with the protesters, but other reports said people were forced to close their businesses, while schools were instructed not to open. Some callers on our programme – The Platform on Radio – recounted their experiences during the protest in Aba. Meanwhile; reports have also circulated that persons claiming to be sympathetic to the Biafran agitation earlier today clashed with soldiers around Eleme Junction in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The confrontation reportedly happened in the early hours of today, around 6.30AM, as soldiers purportedly threw tear gas at the group of persons trekking into Port Harcourt from Aba. Our correspondent who also visited Eleme Roundabout, which marks the intersection of the East-West Road and Aba, reports that the surrounding area was peaceful at about 7.30AM. But it appears the pro-Biafran agitators managed to cross the Eleme intersection, but our correspondent UCHENDU EJIOWHOR who has been on their trail has not been able to locate their convergence point. Our man reports that the Nigerian Army is on alert, as soldiers have been positioned at strategic locations to stop any protest by the group.
