The United States is warning about potential threat to peace in Burundi following a five-day ultimatum for the mopping up of illegal arms in that country.US Ambassador to the United Nations gave this indication, following the announcement by the President of Burundi, PIERRE NKURUNZIZA.
The Burundian leader had warned that those who failed to hand over illegal firearms on the expiration of the deadline would be treated as enemies of the state.
Ambassador SAMANTHA POWER said in a statement that the US is alarmed by the escalating violence in Burundi and dangerous, irresponsible rhetoric on the part of the government, loyalist militias, violent anti-government forces and criminal elements.
She said the US extremely concerned that the five-day ultimatum will trigger widespread violence beginning this coming weekend.
