President MUHAMMADU BUHARI is expected to assign portfolios to thirty-six ministers, following the completion of the Senate screening and confirmation. Former governor of Rivers State, ROTIMI AMAECHI is among the last set of eighteen nominees that were confirmed by the Senate yesterday. You will recall that AMAECHI’s name was contained in the first list of nominees compiled by President MUHAMMADU BUHARI, but due to delays by the Senate, he ended up as the last to be confirmed.
Before the confirmation of AMAECHI’s nomination; the Senate was thrown into a stormy session yesterday after the report of the Committee on Ethics and Public Petition on a petition against his nomination was presented before the chamber. The Committee chaired by Senator SAM ANYANWU from Imo East Senatorial District recommended that the Senate should consider itself unable to approve the nomination of ROTIMI AMAECHI. Senators of the ruling APC and their counterparts of the opposition PDP were divided on the content of the report and whether or not it should be admitted for debate.
With the Senate Leader, ALI NDUME on one side and the Senate Minority Leader, GODSWILL AKPABIO on the other side; both APC and PDP senators cited points of law based on the Nigerian Constitution and the Senate Standing Rule to support their positions.
The argument climaxed with the PDP Senators staging a walk-out, leaving the floor entirely for the APC senators. Following the development; the Senate President; BUKOLA SARAKI put a question on whether or not to adopt the report of the Ethics and Public Petition Committee, which was rejected. Thereafter; the Senate President went on to read the names of the eighteen ministerial nominees, including ROTIMI AMAECHI, who were confirmed in voice votes.
The other confirmed nominees for appointment as ministers include ADEBAYO SHITTU, KHADIJA IBRAHIM, ADEWOLE FOLORUNSO, AISHA ABUBAKAR, MOHAMMED BELLO, HEINEKAN LOKPOBIRI, and GEOFERY ONYEAMA. Also in the list are ANWUKA GOZIE, BABA MUSTAPHA, CLAUDIUS DARAMOLA, USANI UGURU, OCHOLI JAMES, BAWA BWARI, ZAINAB AHMED, ADAMU ADAMU, MOHAMMED DAN ALI, and OKECHUKWU ENELEMAH.
ANWUKA GOZIE who is the ministerial nominee from Imo State was also facing a stumbling block leading up to the last day, but the petition against him was withdrawn by PDP Senators from his state before he was cleared for confirmation. You will recall that the Senate had before now confirmed the first batch of eighteen ministerial nominees who were screened earlier.
