It was a weekend of voting in many countries around the world, including at least three countries in Africa. Voting ended peacefully in Cote d’Ivoire’s post-war election, in spite a stiff contest between incumbent President ALASSANE OUATTARA and ten challengers.
However; reports from the French-speaking West African country say three of the ten opposition candidates withdrew from the election, citing deliberate compromise of the process to the advantage of the incumbent. President OUATTARA denies the charge, even as he joined other voters to cast his ballot at Lycee Sainte-Marie polling station amidst chants of victory from his supporters. You will recall that the 2010 election that brought President OUATTARA to power in 2011 was marred by violence, which plunged the country into months of civil war, after his predecessor LAURENT GBAGBO refused to concede defeat.
