The Nigerian Army says its on-going operation in South East region code named “Operation Egwu Eke Two” is constitutional.

The Army Public Relations Officer USMAN SANI says section two hundred and seventeen of the 1999 constitution empowers the Nigerian Army to assist the police when called upon to tighten internal security across the country.

Speaking as a guest on at television programme monitored from Port Harcourt; the Army spokesman said operation was not targeted at anybody but was meant to enhance the troop sufficiency in internal security.

He clarified that the military presence in the South East region was a mere exercise and not a military operation.

Meanwhile a Human Right Lawyer EGBU ADEGBURUWA has disagreed with the Nigerian Army over the constitutionality of the operation Egwu Eke Two in the South East region.

ADEBURUWA maintained that the constitution only empowers the Nigerian police to maintain internal security stressing that the military will only be invited if the police was overwhelmed in handling a security situation.

The Human Rights Lawyer also said the deployment of soldiers in the south east has some political undertones.

He also noted the agitation by the Indigenous People of Biafra was nothing out of the ordinary adding that other regions across the country has in the past agitated for one thing or the other.
