Hurricane Irma has caused widespread destruction across the Caribbean, with buildings reduced to rubble and at least nine people dead.

Reports say the small island of Barbuda has been reduced to ruins and barely habitable, with officials warning that the death toll is likely to rise.

More than half of the island's three million residents were without power as Irma caused heavy downpours and strong winds.

The category-five hurricane, which is the highest possible level, is now heading north of Puerto Rico, just as two other storms have strengthened to hurricanes.
