The apex socio cultural organization of Ogoniland in Rivers State, KAGOTE wants the Federal Government to involve all stakeholders in ongoing discussions on the implementation of the UNEP Report. KAGOTE's President, PETER MEDEE told journalists in Port Harcourt that the federal government needs to apply a more holistic approach on moves to implement the UNEP Report on cleaning up of Ogoniland of oil pollution. MEDEE expressed dissatisfaction over what he described as the non-inclusion of traditional rulers and members of KAGOTE in the current discussions over the report PETER MEDEE also described the inability of the immediate-past administration to implement the UNEP document as unfortunate. Our correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA reports that it has been four years since the United Nations came out with the report on the clean-up of Ogoniland following years of alleged pollution by oil producing companies. The House of Representatives has set-up a committee to investigate explosions at oil and gas facilities in the Niger-Delta.
Our correspondent reports that the Federal Lawmakers took the decision while considering a motion on a recent explosion at an Agip facility in Ebocha community in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government area of Rivers state. During plenary, some Lawmakers were of the view that many Niger-Delta communities have suffered environmental degradation as a result of negligence by some multinational oil companies. In his ruling, Speaker of the House of Representatives, YAKUBU DOGARA mandated a committee to investigate the explosion at the Nigerian Agip Oil Company facility at Ebocha.
