A curfew has been imposed around Pandogari town in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.
This followed the killing of a man identified as METHODUS CHIMAIJE EMMANUEL in a mob attack.
CHIMAIJE was mobbed for allegedly posting a blasphemous statement on the social media.Three other persons, including a member of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, also lost their lives in the violence. An Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Major N.C. AGWU confirmed the development in a statement published by PR-Nigeria.Major AGWU said troops attached to Operation MESA of 31 Artillery Brigade of One Division of Nigerian Army were called in to restored law and order in the town.Latest reports have it that the rioters disregarded the curfew order and embarked on further violence, looting shops and blocking the Lagos-Kaduna Road, which connects the northern and southern parts of Nigeria.The Army spokesman said troops working in conjunction with the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps have taken control of the situation.
The Army Major confirmed that one church, a house and a shop were burnt in the carnage, while at least twenty-five shops were looted.
He said some persons have been arrested in connection with the violence and handed over to the police for onward investigation and prosecution.
