Reports say police have arrested eight suspects and wounded four others, who are believed to be members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB.The suspects are accused of taking part in the killing of two policemen in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CHARLES MUKA, disclosed in a statement to newsmen that the suspected MASSOB members attacked policemen and army patrol teams at three locations, killing two policemen in the encounters.The Police spokesman said the attacks happened around Cable Point and Abraka areas where two security personnel were also wounded, while the attackers escaped with one AK-47 rifle and one smoke gunner.
The statement also disclosed that a pregnant woman was hit by stray bullet and rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba for treatment.
Elsewhere; about twenty suspected MASSOB members were arrested and paraded in Owerri by the Imo State Police Command for alleged disturbance of public peace.The state Police Public Relations Officer, ANDREW ENWEREM, said the arrests were made around Tetlow Street, where MASSOB members had gathered for an unknown mission.There are also reports of disturbances involving MASSOB members around Nkpor and Onitsha in Anambra State.
Witnesses told reporters that about forty people, including a solder, were killed in the commercial city of Onitsha, with some fifty others arrested.
The respondents claim that trouble started in the early hours of yesterday after soldiers invaded a church at Nkpor Agu where Christian worshippers gathered for prayers.Meanwhile; a faction of MASSOB led by UCHENNA MADU has said its members were not involved the in the demonstration in Onitsha.
The Anambra State Government has also condemned the public demonstration by pro-Biafra agitators, which it said was done without the necessary permit from the police.The position of the state government was made known by the Commissioner for Information and Communication Strategy, TONY NNACHETA.The Information Commissioner urged the people of Anambra to remain calm and vigilant and go about their lawful businesses.
The pro-Biafra agitators were celebrating the forty-ninth anniversary of the declaration of the independent state of Biafra, which marked the beginning of the failed attempt the south-east of Nigeria to secede.
